Trump Rages Against 'Excessive Non-Working Holidays,' Targets Juneteenth: "Change Must Come"

President Donald Trump raged on Thursday that there are “too many non-working holidays” in the U.S. and vowed to change it. Trump’s post came on Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S.

“Too many non-working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed. The workers don’t want it either! Soon we’ll end up having a holiday for every once [sic] working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump wrote .

Joe Biden campaigned on making Juneteenth a federal holiday during his 2020 presidential campaign. The day was already marked by many states across the U.S. – including Texas, which made it a paid state holiday in 1980.

Trump’s second administration has worked overtime to try to purge “DEI” from the government, which many critics note has resulted in the erasure of minority history. The Pentagon deleted materials online honoring veterans like Jackie Robinson and the Tuskegee Airmen, the first Black military pilots, in order to comply with Trump’s DEI regulations. The Pentagon later scrambled to restore pages amid an outcry.

In June of 2020, Trump took credit for Juneteenth becoming a well-known holiday: “I did something good: I made Juneteenth very famous.” Trump added , in an interview with the Wall Street Journal , “It’s actually an important event, an important time. But nobody had ever heard of it.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump “paused the interview to ask an aide if she had heard of Juneteenth, and she pointed out that the White House had issued a statement last year commemorating the day and had put out statements on Juneteenth during each of his first three years.”
