Trump Abruptly Left G7 After Macron's "Irritating" Maneuver

Donald Trump reportedly left the G7 summit a day early because he was irritated by French President Emmanuel Macron's recent criticism of his plan to take control of Greenland.

Trump exited the summit hours after he arrived in Canada on Monday, saying that he needed to return to Washington D.C. to respond to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.

But according to a report in the Financial Times, Trump's departure was partly because he was annoyed by Macron's recent visit to Greenland. The report also said he was not interested in meeting Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, who he was due to hold talks with on Tuesday. The move to leave the G7 came shortly after concerns were raised for Trump's health after a bulge was spotted in his pants .

During his visit to Greenland on Sunday, Macron warned that the territory was not for sale.

"Everybody in France, the European Union thinks that Greenland is not to be sold, not to be taken," Macron said. "The situation in Greenland is clearly a wakeup call for all Europeans. Let me tell you very directly that you're not alone," he added.

The symbolic visit was aimed at displaying French solidarity with Greenland and Danish sovereignty. The territory's Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has rejected Trump's plan, saying Greenlanders must be allowed to decide their own future as it moves toward independence from Denmark.

On Tuesday, Trump slammed Macron on social media, after the French leader tried to reframe his departure from the G7 summit as strategic and suggested that the US might help broker a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

"There is indeed an offer to meet and exchange," Macron told reporters.

Trump responded by accusing Macron of showing off.

"Wrong! He is 'publicity seeking' and always gets it wrong," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington...Much bigger than that. Stay tuned!"

Later, when asked about his comments, Trump said: "That was Emmanuel - nice guy but he doesn't get it right too often."

Trump was due to meet Zelensky at the summit on Tuesday. The Ukranian leader was expected to press the US president for more military support in Ukraine's fight against Russia. The pair have had a fraught relationship since they had a heated meeting at the White House in February.
