President Trump Set to Decide Iran Fate in Next Two Weeks
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — President Donald Trump isn’t giving any hints about whether he’ll take action against Iran in an effort to end its nuclear program.
The president is holding off for now, but the White House says he’s put a timer on a final decision.
“‘I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks.’ That’s a quote directly from the president,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
The Trump administration says the president believes there is “substantial chance of negotiations” with Iran over its nuclear program, but warned they must make a deal before it’s too late.
“Iran has never been closer to obtaining a nuclear weapon,” Leavitt said.
Overnight, Iranian missiles struck a hospital in Israel – injuring dozens of people.
“In this hospital there are patients who are immobile, they can’t even move,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
Israel’s defense minister blamed and threatened Iran’s supreme leader saying quote, “this man absolutely should not continue to exist.”
The White House says it is still in communication with Iran.
President Trump met with his national security team again Thursday as they weigh whether to use U.S. military forces to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities.
“We have an opportunity to take it out. We should do that,” Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) said.
Congress is divided over how much power President Trump has.
“I don’t think the president needs pre-clearance to do one-off military strikes,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) said.
“What we should be doing is try to broker an agreement,” Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) said.
