"Trust in president Trump. President Trump has incredible instincts and president Trump kept America and the world safe in his first term as president in implementing a peace through strength foreign policy agenda," Leavitt said from the podium.

She added: "And with respect to Iran, nobody should be surprised by the President’s position that Iran absolutely cannot obtain. A nuclear weapon. He’s been unequivocally clear about this for decades, not just as president, not just as a presidential candidate, but also as a private citizen."

Her response came just after the White House released a statement from Trump where he announced he would hold off any attack plans until Independence Day.

“Based on the fact that there’s a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future , I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks."

The delay comes after Trump reportedly signed off on potential military strikes on Iran. Sources close to the Oval Office say the president is actively reviewing attack options, including the use of 30,000lb bunker-busting bombs to destroy Iran’s underground nuclear facilities , the US Mirror reported.

Things between the U.S and Iran have heated up in recent days with Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warning that any military involvement by the Americans would cause “irreparable damage” to them.

“Wise individuals who know Iran, its people, and its history never speak to this nation with the language of threats, because the Iranian nation is not one to surrender,” he said in the low-resolution video, his voice echoing. An Iranian diplomat had earlier warned that U.S. intervention would risk “all-out war.”

President Trump has pondered his next steps as the U.S. embassy in Israel began evacuating a number of diplomats and family members who had asked to leave Israel. Meanwhile, senior European diplomats are set to hold talks with Iran in Geneva on Friday, according to a European official familiar with the matter, the Associated Press reported.

The official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and requested anonymity, said the high-ranking diplomats from Germany, France and the United Kingdom as well as the European Union’s top diplomat will take part in the talks.
