Spurs Explain Sacking of Ange Postecoglou in Extensive Club Statement

  • Tottenham Hotspur dismissed Ange Postecoglou on Friday afternoon.

Tottenham Tottenham Hotspur has released a 368-word club statement aiming to explain the dismissal of their manager. Ange Postecoglou .

On Friday afternoon, Spurs announced that Postecoglou would not be continuing as manager for a third season after his post-season break.

He was dismissed only 16 days following his celebrated triumph in an important match. Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final.

That victory secured their spot for next season. Champions League .

However, as mentioned in Friday's statement, Postecoglou also oversaw the club's worst ever Premier League The season concluded with a 17th-place ranking after accumulating 22 losses.

"After reviewing the performance and following considerable contemplation, the club wishes to inform you that they have parted ways with Ange Postecoglou," the announcement started.

In the summer of 2023, Ange came to us from Celtic and led a transformative phase on the field. He brought back the team’s traditional attacking style of play that fans have always loved. Additionally, he etched his name into club lore by guiding us to victory in the UEFA Europa League finals held in Bilbao just last month—a triumph that will be remembered for generations.

'We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.

'However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances - injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.

It's essential that we can contend on various fronts, and we think altering our strategy will provide us with the greatest opportunity for success in the upcoming season and beyond. This has been among the most challenging choices we've had to make, and it’s certainly not a decision we’ve approached hastily or without careful consideration. We've opted for what we consider the correct path toward achieving victory, even though it may be more difficult rather than taking an easier route.

'We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future - he will always be welcome back at our home.

'News on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be announced in due course.'

Tottenham's statement explaining the sacking of Postecoglou was significantly longer than that granted to his predecessors.

When Antonio Conte departed from Spurs, they issued an official statement consisting of merely 111 words. In contrast, they had released a 122-word announcement to mark the conclusion of Jose Mourinho’s tenure at the club.

Even Mauricio Pochettino, Tottenham's longest-serving manager of the Premier League era, only got 210 words in his official statement.
