Spain Snatches Thrilling 5-4 Victory Over France, Advances to Nations League Final

Pakistan, June 7 -- Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal inspired his country to a thrilling 5-4 win over France on Thursday to send the holders through to their third successive Nations League final where they will face Iberian neighbours Portugal. The European champions dazzled in the first half of the semi-final at the MHP Arena and raced into a 2-0 lead with fine goals by Nico Williams and Mikel Merino inside 25 minutes.
Spain’s prodigious 17-year-old talent Yamal started the show by confidently converting a penalty to make it 3-0 just nine minutes into the second half. His fellow Barcelona player, Pedri, followed up with a delightful finish for the fourth goal under a minute later. Soon after, French sensation Kylian Mbappé extended Spain's lead via another penalty around the 60-minute mark. Rounding off this spectacular display, Yamal scored again in the 67th minute, completing an outstanding personal performance.
France subsequently staged an incredible turnaround thanks to a remarkable strike from Rayan Cherki, Dani Viviano’s own goal, and a finishing touch from Randal Kolo Muani, which caused Spain some late anxiety; however, they managed to secure their spot for a showdown against their Portuguese adversaries on Sunday.
Yamal stated to Teledeporte, “I constantly tell my mom that I strive to give everything.” He further explained, “This is what drives me to play football and gets me out of bed every morning.”
France boasts world-class players. After 60 minutes, the score difference was significant, yet they possess players capable of causing difficulties for their opponents. Both Spain and Portugal are highly skilled teams featuring top-tier athletes. Ultimately, the superior team will prevail. My aim is to secure the trophy for Spain.
Under Coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain has been almost unstoppable, losing only once in more than two years. This impressive streak enabled them to clinch the European Championship title recently by defeating England in the final.
Key to De la Fuente's system is his lively wide men Nico Williams and Yamal, and after Mbappe had wasted a golden early chance in Stuttgart and Theo Hernandez crashed an effort against the crossbar, Williams' emphatic finish edged Spain in front.
A few moments later, another graceful maneuver led to Merino scoring the second goal after receiving a precise pass from Mikel Oyarzabal. This marked just the second occasion within the first thirty minutes that France had allowed two goals under coach Didier Deschamps' leadership over his thirteen-year span.
Despite France’s persistent efforts to open up opportunities, they failed to capitalize on these chances. This wastefulness proved detrimental when Yamal, one of the frontrunners for the Ballon d'Or accolade, converted a penalty kick following being fouled by an opponent, likely a younger player.
Yamal, who has made over 100 appearances for Barcelona in various competitions even before reaching the age of 18, remained composed during his second opportunity following Pedro’s impressive fourth goal and Mbappé’s successful penalty. He gently pushed the ball beyond French goalie Mike Maignan. The shot by Lyon player Cherki should have had greater significance until Vivian intervened, which caused some worry among Spanish fans.
Substitute Kolo Muani's goal made extra time look a possibility, but it was too little, too late.
The striker, however, ensured the enthralling semi-final became the first-ever Nations League match to feature nine goals. It was also the first time France had conceded five times in a match since 1969.
We experienced flashes of gameplay we hadn’t seen in quite a while," stated Mbappe, the captain of France. "However, within just ten minutes of the first half, we let in two goals—and the same occurred during the second half. We lacked consistency over the full ninety minutes, though we did show improvement. Since we didn't secure a victory, several negative aspects came to light. However, it’s not entirely doom and gloom.
