Harambee Stars team news
Benni McCarthy selected an unexpected lineup for the trip to Morocco as he aims for his inaugural victory as the nation's team manager.
With the target now firmly on the upcoming Africa Nations Championships (CHAN), McCarthy selected only four foreign-based players.
Adam Wilson, Brian Mandela, and Wilson Lenkupae are the sole players who pursue their professional careers outside of their home nation.
Former captain Victor Wanyama had initially been called up but withdrew from the squad due to personal reasons. His call-up had elicited sharp reactions online, but McCarthy doubled down and called on Kenyans to show respect to the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.
"Please have some respect for Victor Wanyama. He’s a local icon and somebody who has put Kenya’s name higher on the global map."
In his place, Austine Odhiambo was called up with the initial exclusion of last season's Most Valuable Player, raising eyebrows.
With Michael Olunga unavailable up front, Beja Nyamawi, along with Emmanuel Osoro from Talanta and the returnee Moses Shumah, will be counted upon to provide the necessary goals.
In the midfield position, Mohamed Bajaber was part of the traveling team but pulled out at the last minute due to a thigh injury sustained during practice. The player from Kenya Police gained nationwide attention when he made his first official appearance in March against Gambia.
Odhiambo aims to catch McCarthy’s attention from his position within the midfield group. Despite being associated with Gor Mahia, he has frequently found himself sidelined by past mentor Engin Firat as well as current coach McCarthy.
