Japan Shogi Association Names First Female Chief in International Edition

Japan's leading shogi organization on Friday picked the first female chief in its 101-year history as part of efforts to encourage more young people, including women, to participate in the traditional Japanese board game.

Ichiyo Shimizu, a professional shogi player, took over from Yoshiharu Habu, who is 54 years old and a renowned champion, serving as the president of the Japan Shogi Association for a two-year period.

"I am deeply honored to take on this important position," stated Shimizu, aged 56, at a press briefing, emphasizing her commitment to invigorating the shogi sector by introducing innovative ideas while also preserving its heritage.

The organization likewise endorsed a fresh marketing guideline on Friday, which its officials believe could assist in increasing the number of women who turn professional.

The individual from Tokyo became a professional in 1985 and has claimed 43 titles in the women's division within the organization. Her expertise is recognized with a seventh dan ranking in the league.

In June 2023, Habu assumed the presidency and guided the celebrations marking the organization’s centennial event last year. He announced in April that he wouldn’t be seeking a second term as president.
