A former Tottenham star has slammed the the club's choice to dismiss Ange Postecoglou just weeks after their Europa League triumph.

On Friday, Tottenham issued a statement confirming that Postecoglou had been let go from his position just 16 days following his guidance of the team to their first trophy since 2008.

Victory in Bilbao served as a glorious conclusion to what had been an otherwise disastrous campaign for the north London club.

During a campaign marked by an extensive injury list for his team and exacerbated by a crowded schedule, Tottenham endured 22 Premier League losses, setting a new club record within a 38-match season.

However, Ramon Vega - who played 81 times for Tottenham between 1997 and 2000 - insisted the decision to part ways with Postecoglou was 'unbelievable'.

'We are now in a place where a trophy is not valid at all whatsoever,' Vega told Sky Sports News 'The value placed on principles and disciplines differs.'

What sort of inspiration or role model do you aim to be for the upcoming generations and the promising young athletes? Don’t you have aspirations for winning more trophies?

In soccer, outcomes matter greatly. They clinched a trophy. It’s astonishing.

The sole justification they can offer is that during the second season, they faced incredible setbacks due to injures affecting less experienced new talents. As a result, Ange had to reshape the team since there wasn’t adequate support available.

'80 per cent of the men's squad was out - when you're top centre-halves are out for 25 per cent of the season, it's impossible to be successful, with all the competition flying into it.

'Still, they managed to win a trophy? As for the league standings, there’s a valid reason.'

Vega also noted that the timing of Postecoglou's removal is unlikely to instill much faith in the club's board among his replacement.

The 53-year-old also added that he believes that the sacking came partly as a consequence of Postecoglou's strained relationship with club chiefs.

He continued: 'The question is here: "where do Tottenham want to go with their manager? Why are they now sacking someone where they can bring stability into the whole club?”

'The fans - 250,000 people went to the parade, when is the next time they will do that? They aren’t talking about 17th in the league, they won a trophy!

'We are degrading winning a trophy here. Ange had a big personality clash with the main guys in the board. Both parties were not getting on together.'

Spurs now face a summer of uncertainty as they prepare for a return to Champions League football.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Postecoglou in the eyes of the bookmakers.

The next head coach will be the 14th of the ENIC era led by Levy.
