News outlet Sina condemned Coach Branko Ivankovic for the defeat and highlighted numerous errors he committed.

During the initial encounter, China secured a win with a score of 2-1 at their venue; however, in the return game on Thursday evening, Indonesia emerged victorious. The sole goal of the contest was scored via a penalty, which Indonesian forward Ole Romeny executed perfectly.

This marks China's first loss after 68 years of remaining undefeated against Indonesia.

Losing to Indonesia officially dashed China’s chances of securing a playoff spot and marked their fourth successive defeat in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

According to South China Morning Post Social media was flooded with comments from supporters who believed it was time to dissolve a team they saw as "a waste of national resources."

Meanwhile, Xinhua 's headline read: "China fails to qualify for 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeat to Indonesia." The article noted that the national team could not even finish in the top four in group C, and their position at the bottom of the group was described as a major embarrassment and a heavy blow to Chinese football.

Media outlet Sports163 commented that Coach Ivankovic's position seems shaky after the recent string of poor performances, and noted that the exit of multiple naturalized players has created a notable void within the team.

Fans from China also voiced their frustration with their squad's play on social media platforms.

A supporter commented: "What position does Asia hold? The last time China took part in the World Cup was 23 years back."

Another remark stated: "Anyone at the village grocery store would be preferable to them."

China's final World Cup qualifying game is set for June 10 against Bahrain at home.
