Abiodun Rewards Falcons and Lionesses with N30M, Seeks More Hosting Rights
The Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has reiterated his government’s dedication to establishing the state as a center for both national and global sports competitions. This pledge comes after successfully organizing an international friendly game between Nigeria and Cameroon at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. The PUNCH reports.
Speaking to journalists after the Super Falcons defeated the Lionesses of Cameroon 2-0, Abiodun disclosed that more events were lined up for the arena, which includes the U-18 and U-20 African Athletics Championships and the WAFU regional competitions.
"We are committed to establishing a supportive atmosphere for a booming sports economy. This current development is merely the start," he stated.
The governor said this international fixture demonstrated the success of the state’s strategy to attract high-level sports engagements.
He highlighted that the recently refurbished MKO Abiola Stadium will function not just as a venue for fostering young talent but also as a symbolic force of unity throughout Nigeria.
"The success of this occasion, following our hosting of the 22nd National Sports Festival, indicates that we are on the right track," he stated.
Every choice we make is done with intention and careful consideration. We aspire for Ogun not just to be recognized for its industrial power or academic accomplishments, but rather as a portal to excellence, tourism, and athletics.
He mentioned that athletic competitions offer a unique opportunity for collective solidarity among nationals.
“There is nothing in Nigeria that unites us like sports. It breaks barriers of tribe, religion, or region. For those 90 minutes, no one remembers if he is Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa – we are all Nigerians.”
It was also revealed by the Nigeria Football Federation that a total of N30m was awarded to the two national teams in appreciation of their performance.
The Super Falcons received N20m, while the visiting Lionesses were gifted N10m.
The NFF praised the action, stating that it serves as an inspiration for the players.
Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the federation’s General Secretary, mentioned that this backing from governmental leaders enables athletes to achieve outstanding results.
“The financial incentive has been well-received by the team and I believe this is an added psychological boost apart from the victory over the Cameroonians,” Sanusi said.
“We sincerely thank His Excellency, Governor Abiodun, for this unforgettable act of kindness and magnanimity.”
The game was part of the Super Falcons' preparation for the upcoming Women Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco, which will take place precisely one month later. In this tournament, Nigeria has been placed in a group with Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria.
