A new building is on the way for a central Iowa animal shelter

The Ames Animal Shelter is overwhelmed with animals, with some being housed in the hallways due to lack of space.

Rabbits and guinea pigs are among those currently residing in unconventional areas of the 30-year-old facility. Shelter staff are bracing for further crowding as kitten season approaches, anticipating that all kennels will soon be full.

"We are at the start of kitten season. Probably in the next month or so, all these kennels will be full," said Ron Edwards, Ames Animal Control supervisor.

To address the growing demand, the shelter has launched a $7.5 million capital campaign, with $6 million already secured through city funding and community gifts.

The shelter is seeking an additional $1.5 million from the public to reach its goal.

"This shelter has really extended its life as far as it can. We are expanding, and we don’t have space anymore," Edwards said.

Plans for the new shelter include increased capacity, dedicated spaces for animals and a full-service veterinary area.

The upcoming facility, a city-purchased building, will undergo a complete gut renovation and is expected to take about two years to complete.

The new space will include a modernized dog area and additional resources to better serve the community’s animals.

With the city’s population continuing to grow, the shelter finds itself addressing the community's increasing needs.

The project represents not only a solution to overcrowding but also a long-term investment in the welfare of animals in Ames.
