Shooting suspect arrested near Zaxby’s in Chatham County

Savannah police confirmed to they arrested 31-year-old John Fernando Roberts for shooting and killing a man on East Fairmont Avenue Wednesday.

Roberts is behind bars at the Chatham County Jail. He is charged with murder.

Savannah police confirmed to the man shot at the East Fairmont Avenue shooting has died. It's after he was taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition.

A large police presence and forensics team responded near the Zaxby’s on Ogeechee Road in Chatham County Wednesday as part of an ongoing shooting investigation.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office says deputies stopped a vehicle in the restaurant’s parking lot that matched the description of one connected to a shooting earlier in the day on East Fairmont Avenue.

Deputies arrested the suspect at the scene without incident. Forensic investigators were seen collecting evidence from the vehicle and the surrounding area.

According to the Savannah Police Department, the shooting left an adult male with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators with the forensics unit were seen collecting evidence at the scene.

Authorities say there is no threat to the public.

The investigation remains ongoing.
