Connie Sue Jones, a longtime resident of West Sacramento celebrated for her intellect, devotion to science, and fascination with the universe, is set to undertake one last remarkable adventure.
Via Celestis, Inc., a pioneer in memorial spaceflights, Connie’s remains and those of her beloved pet Cassie, will be sent into low Earth orbit this season as part of the Perseverance Flight mission.
Subscribe to our NewslettersHer husband, Richard “Buzz” Jones, has worked to realize her dream of reaching the stars—a dream inspired by her love of science fiction.
Connie, hindered by physical obstacles from achieving her dream of being an astronaut, sought comfort in science fiction novels, notably those written by Robert Heinlein. By her side throughout every adventure was her constant friend, Cassie. Cassie, a lively cocker spaniel, wasn’t merely a pet; she was part of the family and would now soar among the stars alongside Connie, symbolizing their indomitable connection.
This summer’s mission, named Perseverance will send over 150 capsules holding cremated remains and DNA samples into space through SpaceX's SmallSat Rideshare program.
At a speed of 17,000 miles per hour, the Perseverance Flight will circle Earth multiple times prior to making a safe entry back into the atmosphere. The capsules will then be retrieved from the Pacific Ocean. Later, families will get these containers as mementos of this significant cosmic journey.
Since its establishment in 1994, Celestis, known for offering various memorial spaceflight options, has completed 25 missions.
The Perseverance Flight represents the culmination of lives celebrated through a legacy of innovation. Carrying Connie and Cassie to the stars, this isn’t just a tribute to exploration but to the enduring connection between science, love, and dreams that reach beyond our world.
