Amherst Blaze: College Students Homeless, Businesses Shut Down as Flames Spread

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Multiple college students found themselves homeless Sunday night following a fire that broke out in an apartment on South Pleasant Street.

Over a ton of unused medications were gathered in Amherst during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The Amherst Fire Department states the fire was reported on the fourth floor rear porch just after 4:00 p.m. When crews arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the building. Due to the older construction of the complex, the fire quickly spread to the third-floor porch, below the roof, and to the back of the building.

This structure accommodates multiple enterprises on its ground level and residential units across the next three stories. However, it has incurred substantial harm and can no longer be deemed habitable. The Red Cross is aiding about two dozen displaced students who had been residing there when the blaze broke out.

It’s unclear when the businesses on the first floor will reopen. No one was hurt during the fire. and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
